PRE INTERNATIONAL CONDOMS DAY CHANGAMWE SUB COUNTY .

.   The Youths of Changamwe and Jomvu Sub counties have today, February 11th, commemorated the international condoms day. This is a foreword for the actual date that usually on February 13th.

The event was graced by a number of organizations including Stretchers, TAYO (The Amplifiers Youth Organization), KANCO, James Atito, also known as The Period man, Kiota CBO, Dreams, Divas of Changamwe and SEYA youth organization.

The agenda for the pre- international condoms day was to create awareness of the need and the benefits of using condoms. The activities included a public walk along the Changamwe shell- airport road, distribution of condoms to the residents of Changamwe and the main event which was held in Ahmed Shahame technical training institute.

Rebecca Achieng, a member of Stretchers organization, says most people engage in sexual intercourse on valentine's day. While addressing the press, she agrees that the International condoms day is a good step to promoting safe sex. Rebecca adds that condoms play a major role in pregnancy control and reduction of teenage pregnancies. She also encourages the sexually inactive persons to abstain from sex.

According to Dr. Issa Mongar, a representative from the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development, the rate of HIV/AIDS infections have risen by a bigger percentage. Quoting from the report by KEMSA, the distribution of free condoms has reduced by a higher percentage leaving the residents of Changamwe at a higher risk of contracting STIs. He calls upon the government to assist in donation of the condoms.

In addition, according to Bonfas mbindio, the sub county public officer- Changamwe, Mombasa has a positivitivity rate of 7 % whereby over 39, 000 residents of Changamwe are infected with HIV.

He therefore urges that all ages are made aware of the importance of sexual control, which includes the proper usage of condoms. Nevertheless, he appreciates the efforts by the government to supply ARVs which have helped reduce HIV related deaths.

A concern is raised over the inadequate supply of lubricants and condoms to the sex workers which poses risk of contraction of STIs. The partners in unison calls on to the government and the ministry of health to consider donating more supplies for the sex workers. However, Rebeca expresses her dissatisfaction in the low turnout and supply of the condoms for this activity.
