Office of Gender and Women Enterprise Fund being led by DR. ISSAR MONGARE has gone an extra mile to catch a glimpse on inspiration stories of Women living with disabilities and their life experience is very encouraging to the society .This is something to read .
Administrator Assistant working with children with disability gives a motivational story about her life experience.
Being raised by a teenage mother , Jane is a first born in a family of Seven children from Baricho a remote village where people had no knowledge of Disability and how to handle it .
She got Contracted with Polio at the age of six years at a rate which the mother was not aware of poliomyelitis immunization. At this situation, food malnourishment was a challenge and also interacting with other Children who were very hostile .
light of success started walking on her side after relocating to Mombasa and being administered to a polio clinic and provided with mobility aids and therapy that enabled her life .
She later joined academic level levels and experienced challenges of participating in many curriculum activities and also accessing some points which were not disability friendly .
After the College level, she got employed at the coast Region and offered with previledge chance to serve children with special needs at a department of identifying and introducing them to the rehab centers where they basic education together with mentorship programs .
“ I would wish to serve in many platforms that are available just to bring up the potential in people living with disability and encourage them to be ambassadors of Change” She Encourages.
The Chair person of people living with disability In Changamwe is a super woman living with visual impairment.
Sarah used to work at machakos General hospital as clinical officer back in the days where on time she got sick which resulted in losing her sight.
Speaking about her journey,Sarah used to have severe headaches in her lifetime which later resulted to severed strock and she was admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital for medical assistance.It is at this time that she discovered her sight had gone.
Being at home, she got very weak and could not handle herself an issue that resulted to dependancy until a time when she was taken to a rehabilitation center for People with visually impaired and she learnt using braille and living skills on how to cook ,washing and ironing clothes .
A big challenge she went through was Losing her job and also being isolated by friends who they used to work together an issue that led her to depression but luckily her family has been more supportive to her.
Sarah has pursed a Course in Disability awareness raising and advocacy where she gained skills in educating other people on visually impaired issues.
She is also a huge mentor in the Society and has created many groups for people living with disability where she leads in encouraging them advocate for their rights together with fighting stigma in the Society.
“ I thank God for this Far and I still ask for God’s mercy to keep on going strong to represent my people living with Disability . Anytime you see a person with Disability in the Society please support them and give them opportunities. ”
Youth Chair lady of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Kenya,
( SHAKI) is another champion of women living with disability that gives an inspiration story .
Being born with Spina bifida ,
(an open spine ), Deborah was taken for leg surgery and also physiotherapy in order to make her walk.
She joined school at an older age and things were not good on her side due to other children avoiding her because she used to smell urine a situation that had challenge in controlling .
Schooling in an Environment that did not favour her, Deborah was transferred to a school of people living with disability where she got a chance to interact with fellow students and atleast have a room of enjoyment .She met people who had similar conditions and got educated on how to use Bowel management that freed her from wetting the bed and the bad smell that she had lived with for many years. This was a Very nice Experience in her life .
Deborah has pursed networking and is also a talented musician who is skilled in Crocheting and also mentors fellow women living with disability in the crotchet basics and also Mentors many acting as their Chair.
“Am so happy with where I am right now am mentoring other Youths living with spinal Bifida to be leaders of shaki I urge parents not to hide children living with spinal Bifida but bring them so that we can make them grow knowing there’s a future for them ”
Head mistress of portize special school from Mombasa Changamwe Sub county is a physical challenged mother who uses a motorized wheelchair which eases her movement .
Through her story we get encouragement on how she made it in life.
Coming from kaloleni Kilifi county where she was raised in a family of nine Children, Mercy narrates that she was born in a very Normal situation without any difficulties but one year later, she fell I’ll and was taken to a local dispensary where the doctor injected her with a syringe that turned her life situation and brought difficulties in walking due to weak body issues .
Her situation raised alarm in the family and she was taken to seek further medical assistance but situation worsened giving her a difficulty in sitting and movement
Transformation came inn after being Introduced to portritze rehabilitation center where she underwent operation and a plaster that eased her movement .
A year Later , Mercy was enrolled to the same rehabilitation center for education study and qualified for the next Academic level.
Being admitted to study at Coast girls high school, she experienced a very big challenge in attending the classes on a daily basis due to transport issues but this was solved by being transferred to Matuga boarding high school where she ended her secondary level.
Her bright future came true after qualifying an interview as a teacher then later joined Shanzu Teachers training college to sharpen her skills Teaching proffesion.
She describes shanzu as a disability unfriendly at that time due to random movements in different lecture halls which were not easy to access but her struggle bore fruits made her get recognized then placed to be a teacher in portritze rehabilitation center where until today she has transformed many children living with disability as far as education is concerned.
In giving hope to women with special needs she says
“Am thankful to be married in a happy family as woman with special needs may other women in my state have a such encouragement in life and never give up ”
